UN special envoy hails Sultanate’s efforts in solving Yemeni dispute

Muscat: Oman’s efforts and its positive role in settling the dispute in the Yemeni Republic was hailed by Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, Special Envoy of the United Nations (UN) for Yemen.
He expressed his thanks and appreciation to the Sultanate’s government under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
On his departure, he pointed out in a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA) that his recurrent visits to the Sultanate are due to the positive and neutral role played by the Sultanate as it had facilitated many meetings in Muscat.
Consultations
He added that the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had visited the Sultanate to thank for its efforts in promoting peace.
He further said that the more than 90 day-long consultations in Kuwait have covered all the issues that have become very clear for us today. “We cannot say that the Kuwait talks have failed. The role of the mediator is to understand the stances, differences and issues on which we can build. We have reached this level,” he added.
He pointed out that the GCC Foreign Ministers will meet on Thursday in Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the presence of John Kerry, US Secretary of State as the US has been invited to be briefed on the talks in Kuwait. The UN Special Envoy for Yemen affirmed that the GCC states support reaching a comprehensive and complete solution for this crisis. He noted that the solution should be through a way that allows chain of events and implementation of the things on which there has been a consensus whether they are initiatives by the Security Council or the Gulf initiative or the issues related to national dialogue and its outputs. All these issues are presented on the table for discussion.
He hoped that the meeting will witness renewal of support by the GCC states in the presence of two important partners and two permanent members at the UN Security Council namely the United States of America (USA) and United Kingdom (UK).
