Oman bow out of ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifier with victory over Qatar

Muscat: Oman ended their ICC U-19 World Cup Asian Qualifier Division 2 competition with an 88-run victory over Qatar in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.
The end was as impressive as their promising start, when they launched their campaign with a big victory over Thailand. But in between the Sultanate squad lost three consecutive matches — to Kuwait, the UAE and Hong Kong respectively. And all they achieved with Tuesday’s result was a seventh place finish in the 10-team competition, from which only top two teams make it to the Division 1 competition.
And as in their opening match victory over Thais, in Qatar tie too it was captain Wasim Ali who played a stellar role with a fine all-round performance.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Wasim led from the front scoring 71 runs with nine fours as Oman put up a competitive total of 211 all out in 49.3 overs.
For Oman, other major contributions came from Praythyosh Sivakumar (36) and Mohammed Salman (36). Khalid Siddiqui took four wickets for Qatar.
In reply, Qatar were bowled out for 123 in 35.5 overs with Wasim Ali claiming four wickets with his left-arm orthodox spin bowling. Mohit Kanaiyalal took three wickets and vice-captain Partish Hitech bagged two.
