#OmanPride: Music teacher’s tunes capture Omani essence

Muscat: Lisa Morgan who moved to Oman six years ago from Bahrain is completely hypnotised by the country’s beauty and people. And a song made by her about Oman, ‘Oman is home to me’, has received 1,818 views on Youtube in four days.
While away on holiday in Spain, Morgan found herself in deep thought, “Why isn’t there a song in English that sings about this beautiful country?” Three years later, it finally became a reality.
Creating a song that celebrated commonality is extremely important to her. Morgan spent time studying Omani and Arabic music including their poetic lyrics.
“Every song is about how much they love Oman, and His Majesty. That’s why we are all here,” Morgan added. Morgan has been extremely perceptive during her time here.
Her ‘Oman is home to me’, uses a blend of Omani melody, instruments and even recorded sounds from the desert. There are four local Omani musicians each playing an instrument: percussions, oud, guitar and the violin.

The song includes twenty-two students from the American British Academy’s multicultural choir, all whom have different nationalities. Morgan said it became a community project.
“I wanted to know how the song made Omanis feel,” Morgan said.
“It was really important that I got the story right and that I represented Omanis well. The reactions from Omanis have been very emotional. They’ve said things like ‘I can’t believe a western woman has expressed everything we feel about our country’. That means so much to me.”
Although the song itself is complete, Morgan believes that producing a video to go along with the music would make it even more powerful. “My dream is to film a beautiful music video that reflects the scenery of the pictures painted in the song,” she said.
“Oman is just such a beautiful country. It would make such a great promotional piece for the country,” Morgan added. “Oman is the jewel of the Khaleej (Gulf Cooperation Council),” Morgan who is originally from Sydney, Australia, said. But the highest of honors would be presenting it to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. Morgan believes that her work is the epitome of all that Oman is.
“My dream above everything would be to present it to His Majesty the Sultan as gift,” she said. “So he could see how beautifully his people are collaborating musically, and that they have in common their love for this country.”
