More Omani medics to fill skill gap: Minister

Muscat: More college places for medical students will be made available in Oman due to the skills gap in the sector, Rawya Al Busaidiyah, minister of higher education said on Thursday, according to Oman TV.

The minister said the Sultanate needs Omani medics.

She explained that Oman is planning to build a college of technology in Musandam and that a committee has been formed to offer courses at the new college linked to the expected job opportunities.

The committee involves the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Manpower.

This was stated during a Majlis Al Shura discussion attended by the minister.

Al Busaidiyah said the private sector should provide students with training opportunities during their studying period.

The two-day discussion covered five main themes - policies of higher education in the Sultanate, the strategies and the five-year plans, the colleges of applied sciences, the private higher education, and student accommodation at institutions of the Ministry of Higher Education.
