Oman Table Tennis: Bahrain's Anwar Makki retains OGC crown

Muscat: Anwar Makki of Bahrain defended his title in style with a comeback win over Ziyad Azizi of Jordan in the final of the 2nd Oman Gas Company (OGC) Table Tennis Open Tournament organised by the Oman Table Tennis Committee (OTTC) at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher.
Taking the third spot was Hassan Abdul Rahim of Bahrain followed by Hamad Bu Haji in the fourth place.
Anwar Makki with the title became richer by $3000, while Ziyad Aziz pocketed $2000. Third-placed Hassan walked away with $1000 and Hamad Bu Haji received a prizemoney of $500.
Egyptian Ahmed Helmy, Marzouq Rashidi of Kuwait, Fadi Kiwan of Lebanon and Jordan's Zaid Yousef received cash prizes worth $200 respectively for taking the spots from fifth to eighth respectively.
Thirteen countries — Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Philippines, India, Nigeria, Italy, Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt — in the event.
The final between Anwar and Ziad proved to be thriller which ended in favour of the former 3-2.
However, defending champion Anwar found the going tough losing the first two games to Ziad at 11-8, 13-11.
But Anwar bounced back in style winning the next three at 11-9, 11-7 and 11-3.
The prize giving ceremony was presided over by Mahmoud bin Mohammed Al Amri, General Manager of Oman Gas Company, and Abdullah Ba Makalef, head of the Oman Table Tennis Committee. Also present was Fahad Abdullah Al Raisi, director at Ministry of Sports Affairs.
