MUSCAT: A case of a child being run over by a truck has been reported with the Royal Oman Police.

Omar Al Siyabi, a resident of Quriyat, informed the police that a child was run over by a truck in the market area in Quriyat Central. The child died of his injuries.

“After hitting the child, the driver fled the scene, leaving him soaking in blood. One good Samaritan carried the child to the hospital, which is 3km away but the child died of his injuries,” the resident told Times of Oman.

In a quick reaction job, the ROP immediately swung into action and was able to arrest the erring driver in one hour’s time as the incident had been reported immediately to the police station.

Omar also pointed to a common concern of the residents of the area. He said, “residents of the area have constantly pressed the authorities to put up pedestrian bridges and speed breakers in areas where there is heavy traffic and residential crowd.

Speed breakers needed

“The need for speed breakers near schools, hospitals, markets, and some government institutions has also been expressed to the officials. Hope after this tragedy some action would be initiated by the decision-makers.”

Omar also pointed out that small children should not be allowed to cross the street by themselves or they should be trained adequately in this regard.

“We cannot always put the blame on the driver.

“We can stop these run-over accidents if people have more traffic awareness.”
