MUSCAT: The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) has opened its admissions for all study-programmes.

The university has said in a press release that all BSc programmes are internationally accredited. GUtech offers excellent higher education in the Sultanate. “Students, who meet GUtech’s admission requirements for direct entry into one of the Bachelor of Science programmes, have the possibility to apply for financial aid. Financial Aid will be offered to students who will pass scholarship examinations.

“The dates and content of these examinations will be communicated to students who will get admission to GUtech,” said Professor Dr Burkhard Rauhut, Rector at GUtech.

GUtech offers a Pre-University Programme, four Bachelor of Science programmes in Applied Geosciences, Applied Information Technology, Urban Planning and Architectural Design, Sustainable Tourism and Regional Development. The language of instruction at GUtech is English, German is taught as an additional language. This year the university will introduce new programmes.

“We are proud to extend our study programmes and introduce two new Bachelor of Engineering and two Master programmes,” said Professor Rauhut. Like all GUtech study-programmes, the new programmes are tailor-made for the Gulf region and were designed by German professors from GUtech’s parent-university RWTH Aachen University in Germany.

GUtech is affiliated with RWTH Aachen University, one of the leading universities of technology in Europe. According to a European University Ranking Report 2009, Aachen achieved a leading position in all fields of engineering. Currently about 35,000 students are studying at RWTH Aachen University. The university is a member of the prestigious IDEA League, a network of leading Universities of Technology in Europe.

Mechanical Engineering

The first four semesters of the programme will focus on the fundamentals of mathematics, natural sciences and informatics together with the basics of engineering. The second part of the study programme will concentrate on key areas of mechanical engineering. Mechanical Engineers work on power-producing machines, such as electronic generators, internal combustation engines, and steam and gas turbines.

Process Engineering

The eight semester programme in Process Engineering focuses on applied competences for designing mechanical, chemical and thermal processes.

Process engineers are concerned with chemical and biochemical processes in which raw materials undergo change, and scaling-up processes from the laboratory into the processing plant.

Engineers will have the possibility to work in different areas: the development of economical industrial processes, such as food and beverages, artificial fibres, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, energy and clean water.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirement for all GUtech’s BEng and BSc programmes is a pass in a relevant stream of Foundation Year programme or equivalent academic results, such as A-Level or International Baccalaureat. In addition, students must demonstrate adequate competency in English with at least IELTS 6.0.

Master of Science

GUtech will introduce two part-time Master of Science Programmes in Petroleum Geoscience and in Integrated Urban Planning this year.

Graduates of the MSc in Integrated Urban Planning will be highly qualified to work in master planning, sector planning, sustainable urban conservation, heritage management, scientific research and consultancy.

The MSc in Petroleum Geoscience focuses on the exploration and production of oil and gas as well as the supply of energy. “Oman’s dynamic oil and gas sector has generated a demand for geosciences professionals which is expected to increase as more manpower-intensive Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) operations are introduced in the near future,” said Professor Urai.

In order to allow professionals to combine the study programme with their ongoing job assignments, the MSc in Integrated Urban Planning as well as the MSc in Petroleum Geoscience are offered either in the afternoon and evening or conducted in block seminars.

Special features

To maximise the success of the studies, each student has a mentor, who will guide and constantly follow him/her during the studies. The individualised mentoring process allows professors and lecturers to be constantly aware of the actual progress of their students.

Students will take the majority of their courses in Oman, including field-based training with outdoor activities in Oman’s world class outcrops. For modules requiring state-of-the-art analytical equipment, students will be able to travel to Germany to do this work at the RWTH Aachen campus.
