Road accidents drop by 35% in first 10 days of Ramadan

Muscat: The number of road accidents decreased by 35% during the first 10 days of Ramadan, official sources said on Tuesday.

Statistics from the General Traffic Department at the Royal Oman Police (ROP) indicated a decrease in traffic accidents during the first 10 days of the holy month of Ramadan this year compared to the same period last year.

Traffic accidents decreased by 35%, deaths by 46%, and injuries by 33%, the ROP said on Tuesday.

In this regard, Brigadier General/Engineer Ali bin Sulayem Al-Falahi, stressed the importance of concerted efforts by all members of society to achieve the highest rates of road safety and ensure the smooth flow of traffic during this holy month.

The Director General of Traffic indicated that the increase in traffic during the month of Ramadan is due to many factors, including the increase in purchasing activity in markets and commercial complexes, the departure of families and friends to break the fast elsewhere, and the desire of some to complete their family tasks before breakfast time.

He explained that the most prominent wrong behaviours that were monitored during the past ten days of the blessed month of Ramadan, which pose a threat to everyone’s safety on the roads, are driving at excessive speed and recklessness, and by using the phone while driving, which distracts the driver’s attention and makes him vulnerable to accidents, in addition to incorrect entry to the main roads and in front of vehicles in their lane, and wrong overtaking is one of the main causes of many traffic accidents on single, two-way roads.

Regarding the movement of trucks, the Director General of Traffic explained that it has been decided to prevent the passage of trucks in order to avoid the occurrence of traffic jams throughout the holy month of Ramadan on the main roads in the Muscat Governorate, the Al-Dakhiliyah Road from the Muscat Governorate to the Bidbid Bridge, and the Al-Batinah General Road from the Muscat Governorate to the Wilayat of Shinas during the period.
