Heavy rains disrupts normal life in Delhi, 7 dead in Hyderabad

New Delhi/Hyderabad: Heavy rains lashed Delhi, National Capital Region (NCR) and Hyderabad on Wednesday morning, killing seven people in Hyderabad. Massive traffic jams and water-logging affected commuters across these cities.
Delhi Traffic Police said major water-logged points included Ring Road Dhaula Kuan, Bhairon Marg towards Mathura Road and the Teen Murti roundabout among others.
The weather office has forecast thunderstorm with rain through the day. The minimum temperature was recorded at 26 degrees Celsius at 8.30am.
The city received 3.9 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, an official said. The maximum temperature will be around 32 degrees Celsius. Barapullah flyover towards DND, Ashram Chowk, Ring Road Maharani Bagh, Lajpat Nagar, Sarai Kale Khan, Raja Garden towards Mayapuri and Gymkhana towards Teen Murti Marg were also among the major water-logged points.
An official at the Delhi airport said there has been a slight delay in departure of flights on account of heavy rains. A Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Delhi was diverted to Jaipur due to "bad weather" in the morning at around 0900 hours, the official said.
At least seven persons including four children were killed on Wednesday in two separate rain-related incidents following heavy downpour in the city since morning which has caused water-logging in many areas and brought traffic to a standstill in most parts of the city.
Four members of a family including two kids and their parents died after a wall collapsed on their hut at Ramanthapur area, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Malkajgiri Zone) E Ramachandra Reddy told PTI, adding the victims were sleeping when the incident occurred.
In another incident, three members of a family including a woman and her two daughters died when the roof of their house collapsed in Bholakpur area, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Zone) VB Kamalhasan Reddy said. Another building collapsed at Lal Darwaja in Old City, but no one was injured.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy instructed officials that people staying in old and dilapidated buildings be evacuated immediately to save lives. Due to heavy rains water-logging was reported at several places and GHMC teams were clearing stagnated points at Nampally, Secunderabad station, Khairatabad and other areas.
Following heavy rains, massive traffic congestions were reported between L. B. Nagar to Malakpet, Moosarambagh, Yakutpura, Uppal, Tarnaka, various localities under Secunderabad, Secretariat, Mehdipatnam, Lakadi-ka-Pul, Punjagutta among other areas.
Office goers had a tough time commuting to work with several roads overflowing while many residential areas in low-lying areas also got inundated due to heavy rains.
Amberpet received maximum rainfall of 118 mm in the city. Telangana Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma was monitoring the situation.
