Fines and jail terms for companies that breach Oman's consumer rules

Muscat: Non-perishable goods can be exchanged or returned and redeemed within 15 days of purchase if defective, the Public Authority of Consumer Protection has said.
According to a public notice by the authority uploaded on its official twitter handle, a consumer can exchange or return and redeem the price of an item that he or she finds defective within 15 days of receiving it.
The authority has clarified that this policy does not apply to those goods that are rapidly perishable.
Those items that can be exchanged or returned or refunded it they have any defect. Also if the item does not meet the standard specifications or the purpose of the contract, the consumer has the right to seek an exchange or refund.
However, it has made clear that there has to be a proper receipt or bill for purchase of the item.
Fines and jail sentences have been handed out to commercial establishments for violating the consumer protection law.
The PACP intervention has resulted in primary courts across the Sultanate passing a number of rulings against establishments for violating consumer protection laws.
Recently, in a case based on a complaint against a commercial establishment selling motorcycles in Nizwa wilayat, the primary court ordered paying damages to the consumer.
Another case against an establishment specialised in curtains and furniture, the court not only ordered payment of damages to the complainant, but also sentenced the owner of the establishment to a jail term.
