The current capacity of the sewage treatment plant in Muscat has an intake capacity of 70,000 cubic metres of sewage per day for treatment and the Haya Water chief said that the capacity will increase to 900,000 cubic metres by year 2045 in line with the main strategic plans.
“It’s a long journey ahead of us. We would require a lot of effort in the coming years to pull this off,” said Abdulhussein.
He also revealed that according to their strategic plans, they will increase the daily capacity intake of the sewage treatment plant in Seeb from 62,000 cubic metres to 80,000 cubic metres as well as establishing a new plant, which will have an intake capacity of 120,000 cubic metres of waste water and later increasing its capacity to 320,000 cubic metres by 2045.
He said that the current 1,800 kilometres sewage network in Muscat will also go up to 5,600 kilometres in the near future.
The water treatment networks will also go up to 814 kilometres from 300 kilometres now.
The Haya Water chief said that they use the water that they have treated to produce fertiliser for agricultural purposes as well as use the water for Muscat’s golf courses.
Haya Water will also cover other governorates of the Sultanate according to the company approved master plan which takes into consideration the expansion of the cities and the rapid growth of population, he said. The company is working hard to deliver the wastewater service to the Williyat of the Muscat Governorate by 80 per cent by 2022.
Statistical data and predictions in the annual report of National Centre for Statistical Information (NCSI) indicates that there is a growth in population and increase in the number of residential units. All this have led to significant demand for wastewater services, as well as an increase in the expansion for wastewater projects and their execution time.
The CEO elaborated more on Haya Water services and emphasised that the number of connected customers in Muscat Governorate is more than 86,329. On the other hand, the company has registered more than 17,000 customers in other Governorates except Dhofar and Sohar.
